SafeBAE's Research Published
Most school-based sexual violence prevention programs are not evidence-based — and even fewer are designed with or by young people. At SafeBAE, we’re building something different: prevention rooted in youth leadership, survivor-centered programming, and real-world data. Our evaluation efforts ensure our model is effective, equitable, and responsive to the communities we serve.
This commitment to rigor led to our research being published in the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse. Co-authored by our Executive Director, Shael Norris, with Dr. Lindsay Orchowski and Dr. Prachi Bhuptani of Brown University, Rhode Island Hospital, and Lifespan Hospital, the study shows that SafeBAE’s approach to preventing sexual violence isn’t just effective — it’s transformative.
2023 Program Efficacy Data
Climate Survey
Since 2015, our work with thousands of students has confirmed what the data now makes undeniable: sexual violence is at crisis levels for teens across the country. While the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey underscores the severity of this issue, SafeBAE has sought deeper insights into how it plays out in schools every day.
Through the SafeBAE National School Sexual Violence Climate Survey (2020–23), we partnered with students and schools to capture the lived realities of school culture — focusing on safety, support systems, and institutional accountability. The findings reveal the profoundly dangerous environments many secondary students face and provide critical evidence to drive system-level change and strengthen prevention efforts.
Peer Educator Training Data
As troubling as our Climate Survey findings are, the results from our Certified Peer Educator Training offer hope and clear evidence of impact. More than 2,000 students across 45 states have completed the training, demonstrating measurable growth in knowledge, attitudes, and confidence around consent and prevention.
Grounded in youth experiences and aligned with the National Health Education Standards (NHES), the curriculum reflects best practices for school-based prevention while remaining student-driven and survivor-centered. Developed over eight years, the program has become one of the most comprehensive and authentic prevention resources available, endorsed by both students and educators.
