How SafeBAE is Making an Impact During the “Red Zone” — Empowering Students Through Film

by Henry O’Neal

What is the ‘Red Zone’?

The start of a new school year comes with excitement and fresh possibilities, but there’s a side to this time of year that doesn’t get enough attention—the Red Zone”. It’s a critical time, and perhaps the most dangerous, for students across the country. The Red Zone refers to the first six to eight weeks of the academic year, a period when students, particularly first-year students, are at the highest risk of sexual violence.

SafeBAE is stepping in, aiming to change the narrative and empower young people to protect themselves and each other.

‘It’s Giving Red Flags’, Directed by SafeBAE’S Cheyenne Tyler Jacobs

Enter “It’s Giving Red Flags”, SafeBAE’s newest short film, directed by the brilliant Cheyenne Tyler Jacobs, a survivor herself. The film highlights the subtle but significant warning signs—red flags—in relationships that often go unnoticed. Through relatable and real-life scenarios, the film challenges viewers to recognize behaviors like manipulation, possessiveness, and control before they escalate.

What makes this film even more powerful is the team behind it. With 95% of the crew being women, many of whom are survivors, the production represents resilience and empowerment, bringing a depth of authenticity that’s undeniable. Filmed in Atlanta, the city’s energy pulses through the film, adding vibrancy to its message.

Film and Teaching Guide: Practical Tools for the Red Zone

Alongside the film, SafeBAE is also releasing a teaching guide that helps educators and students dive deeper into topics like consent, boundaries, and spotting relationship red flags. The guide includes discussion prompts and activities that encourage students to reflect on how these issues play out in their own lives.

With the film and the guide working together, SafeBAE is providing a full set of resources that can help students and educators better navigate relationships, especially during the Red Zone. The guide’s straightforward format makes it easy for anyone to lead conversations that help students understand and respond to unhealthy behaviors before they escalate.

Why This Film Matters During the “Red Zone”

The Red Zone” is when sexual violence is at its highest, and SafeBAE’s release of “It’s Giving Red Flags” during this period is no coincidence. The film is meant to spark conversations and raise awareness before harm can happen. By shining a light on the subtle warning signs of unhealthy relationships, the film encourages students to recognize these red flags early on and empowers them to take action, both for themselves and their peers.
