Rape Culture & How to Shift to a Culture of Respect

This teaching guide provides educators with discussion prompts, activities, and facilitation tips to help students recognize how rape culture shows up in everyday life and take action to create cultural change. Paired with a short film featuring SafeBAE co-founder Charlie Coleman, the guide gives students concrete steps for challenging harmful norms and building a culture rooted in equity, consent, and accountability.

What is rape culture?

Rape culture refers to the values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that trivialize or normalize sexual violence. From victim-blaming and harmful media portrayals to peer pressure and gender stereotypes, these norms allow violence to persist. But students can be part of shifting the narrative — from a culture that excuses harm to one built on respect and consent.
